York Hospital Radio has unveiled its Christmas schedule for 2019, aimed at making a stay in York hospital a little more enjoyable during the festive season.

Outside broadcasts feature heavily in the schedule, to keep listeners in tune with what’s going on in the city.

Patients will be able to hear the annual Service of Nine Lessons and Carols from York Minster, both live on 22 December and again on Christmas Eve. York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir, recorded live in York Hospital, will also be in concert.

Christmas Day itself will include a recording of the recent NHS Carol Concert, also from York Minster, and the York Community Carol Concert from York Barbican, featuring local musicians and choirs.

Boxing Day highlights will be the Choir Festival recorded earlier this year at Joseph Rowntree Theatre, and another recent concert by local music star Steve Cassidy.

As well as the Outside Broadcasts, the station will also be broadcasting many live programmes on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, including an interview with Hollywood legend Didi Conn (Frenchy in ‘Grease) and a special message from Dr John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York.

York Theatre Royal pantomime star Suzy Cooper will be interviewed by Elly Fiorentini and will be choosing her favourite music.

York Hospital Radio chairman Ian Clennan said: “Nobody would choose to be in hospital over Christmas, but we like to do our bit – along with the staff in the hospital – to make sure that patients can enjoy lots of great festive cheer and keep in touch with Christmas in York.”

York Hospital Radio is a registered charity, and broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to the York Hospital, with volunteers presenting a mixture of music shows, requests, football commentaries from Bootham Crescent, a range of outside broadcasts from other theatres and concert venues, and information designed to help patients during their stay in hospital. The radio station can also be heard online at www.yorkhospitalradio.com
